The Freedom of Information Law (FOIL) allows citizens to request access to public records. Reclaim New York has put together a user manual explaining the FOIL process and produced a flowchart showing the timeline to follow when submitting a FOIL request. Reclaim has also created three templates for you to use to help get you started (a FOIL request, an appeal letter if your request is ignored, and an appeal letter if your request is denied).
Nothing in these documents should be construed as legal advice or as establishing an attorney-client, or confidential relationship. These documents discuss the process by which citizens can submit a Freedom of Information Law request. Although we go to great lengths to make sure our information is accurate and useful, we recommend you consult a lawyer if you want legal advice.
